Indian Army has chosen four lady officers including Lt Col Nandini to train the first batch of women soldiers which will become a part of military police by end of this year or early next year. Lt General Ashwani, the commandant of Military Police had interviewed Lt Col Nandini to understand the significance of the role of instructor for the first batch of women soldiers in the Army.
Under this drive, Army now plans to induct more women officers as instructors. The first batch includes Major Julee who was also the instructor to the first batch of women constables in Assam Rifles. The women Corps of Military Police (CMP) batch will see a hundred women jawans being recruited and their primary responsibility will be to police army cantonments.
Currently, the Army, Air Force, and Navy have only women officers, not jawans. Women soldiers are undergoing selection process and thousands of women of women across the country have volunteered for it. The training of the selected 100 will begin in December in Bengaluru. The duration of training will be of 61 weeks which will be similar to male soldiers in the spirit that they are ‘soldiers first’. The maximum cadre strength of the women contingent would be 1700.
