A condolence meeting was held on Monday evening at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-B) to pay tribute to their alumnus and former chief minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar. He died after a long illness on Sunday evening.
The meeting was held at PC Saxena auditorium at 5 pm on Monday. Manohar Parrikar, 63, died at his private residence in Goa after suffering from pancreatic cancer for more than a year.
He had addressed the 55th convocation of the Mumbai-based premier institute in which he had encouraged students to take up jobs in developmental and social sectors. A former IIT-B student who was a part of the convocation ceremony told that he also encouraged students to join defence forces and politics for the betterment of society.
Manohar Parrikar at the conference had said, “Why can’t IIT graduates, who have had the best engineering education in the country, take up academics and run some of these colleges, and transform their quality?” The condolence message of the institute stated that the news of his death was a shock to them. The statement further added, “He was the institute’s distinguished alumnus and keenly involved with many initiatives at IIT Bombay. He was also deeply involved with the launch of IIT Goa.”
