The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) has announced that it would increase the quota of its seats to 12.5% in this academic year. It is a step forward in the direction of empowering economically weaker sections of upper castes, as directed by Ministry of Human Resource Development.
This order had directed all educational institutions from the centre and states to finalise a plan to announce 10 percent quota from next academic session by March 31.
IIT-D Director V Ramgopal Rao told a leading daily that the increase in seats will be 12.5 per cent this year and rest of it will be in the next year. For this, the institute needs to submit financial requirements to government which is currently in process. The communication also has to reach JEE’s central office.
He further stated that the institute is following MHRD’s directive right now and it would consider the constitutional aspect of reservation in upper caste only when Supreme Court takes a decision in that regard.
