The University Grants Commission has delayed its decision to grant the Institute of Eminence tag to more educational institutions since the expert committee has already recommended more than the required number, a leading daily reported on 30th February.
Earlier in 2017, the government had asked the expert committee to name 20 institutions, 10 in private domain and 10 in public domain which have set highest standards in effective teaching and providing research opportunities to students. According to the government, only such institutions could be given the tag.
One of the members of the University Grants Commission, told that the expert committee has suggested 15 names in each category making the total to 30. She further added, “But the government scheme said we had to select ten in each category. So we decided to refer back to the government, whether they want to expand the scheme,”
The HRD ministry in July granted the IoE status to three more public and private institutions after the expert committee had already recommended 11 names. The committee in December added 19 more names taking the number of institutes to 30.
